*Bus Basics
Several different transit authorities serve communities in the greater Puget Sound area. All bus systems connect with adjacent community systems. However, as of 2010, you must pay for each segment of your trip unless you use an ORCA card, which does recognize adjacent bus systes.
Using the ORCA card will save you a substantial amount of money! For instance, a one way trip between Olympia and downtown Seattle uses two different bus systems (Intercity and Sound Transit). If you pay for each of the two segments using cash, the trip costs $5.50. If you use an ORCA card, the trip is $4.00.
You can purchase an ORCA card online for $5.00 at www.ORCAcard.com Once you receive the card, you can register and “load” your card online using a credit card.
Transit systems protocol are very similar, such as:
- Children under age 6 travel on the bus at no charge
- Adults over age 65 ride at a reduced (usually ½ of adult) fare
- Youth (age 6 to 18) ride at a reduced fare
- Buses pick up and drop off passengers only at designated stops
- Most buses have bike racks (on the front of the bus)
- Buses are handicap accessible and can accommodate walkers and wheelchairs
- Front seats in the bus are reserved for wheelchairs, strollers, disabled or elderly passengers.
- Cell phone use is discouraged on the bus and MP-3 or other audio players should be kept at a level that only user can hear
- Fares are generally $1.50 to $2.00 for an all day pass within a single transit system.
- Exact change is needed.
- It is OK to bring a cup with a lid onto the bus but eating food is not allowed.
Each bus system provides trip-planning assistance on their websites : see links in Transportation Resources
While taking a bus, here are some helpful hints:
- Carry several single dollar bills and quarters for bus fare (if you don’t have an ORCA card)
- Don’t be afraid to ask the driver or fellow travelers questions: about how to get specific places, the best transfer points, where to catch the returning bus, or when your stop is coming up.
- Go to your community’s transit website to learn details and updates on fares, routes, schedules, etc.
- If you use more than one transit system, GET AN ORCA CARD! For more information, see www.ORCAcard.com
